THE Welsh Sheep 2023 event comes to Mid Wales on Tuesday May 16th 2023 with the biennial event always an important feature of the farming calendar.
Hosts are the Maesmawr Group members, the Owen family – Huw, Sioned and Dafydd – of Redhouse Farm, Aberhafesp near Newtown.
“The emphasis here in Redhouse is on good quality, top quality prime lamb and the same with the cattle. We want people to know us for what we are producing,” explains Huw.
Red House extends to 550 acres and rises to 855 feet above sea level, with sweeping views down to the Severn Valley. Huw, Sioned and Dafydd run 1000 Texel cross ewes, together with a few Welsh Mules and a hundred pure Texels and 100 Limousin suckler cows, the majority registered. Dafydd, who studied at Glynllifon College and Llysfasi College, has his own flock of Beltex ewes.
Welsh Sheep organiser Helen Roberts says: “I am looking forward to working with the Owen family and admire their enthusiasm and forward thinking in what could be turbulent times for farming as a whole”.
The Maesmawr Group will have a stand at the event with ecologists and members on hand to talk about the collaborative “Nature and People Working Together” project, funded by the Welsh Government and EU’s Sustainable Management Scheme, which has been running in the Upper Severn Catchment for the past two years. And there will be support from the Group for local schoolchildren to attend the event.
